The race for the championships venue for CECAFA is shaping up to be a two man race between Gov Ali Hassan Joho of Mombasa County and Gov Alfred Mutua of Machakos County. The two Cord governors have placed their bid to the football body hoping to be the hosts
On November 5, accompanied by his Executive Member for sports, youth and gender Hazel Koitaba, Gov Joho officially handed over Mombasa County bid to host Cecafa games. The event, at Hillpark Hotel in Nairobi, was attended by the football body’s Secretary General Nicholas Musonye, Football Kenya Federation President Sam Nyamweya among other leaders.
Tomorrow, with the opening of Mombasa Municipal Stadium, the proposed CECAFA venue, the Governor is set to host the soccer management officials as well as enjoy friendly matches by local teams from the county.
On the other side, Gov Mutua has also completed renovating Kenyatta Stadium and has already been visited by CECAFA and FKL officials. While meeting the officials, the Governor pledged to sponsor the teams that will play in Machakos with a tune of sh 5 million to ensure the success of the event. It would be the first time the region hosts a football event of such a magnitude and the ever hopeful Mutua understands all to well the significance of hosting the event in Machakos, a fast rising economic hub in the eastern sphere of the republic.
Mombasa and Machakos are also developing a multi-billion entertainment industry. Recently, Gov Mutua launched ‘Machawood’, the future equivalent of Hollywood and Bollywood. Remember, all these are politics – developmental politics of the Cord Coalition. Jubilee?
