The government intends to close down Hope International Ministries associated with former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga. The church which is under government investigations will be closed with allegations that members engage in criminal activities.
Maina Njenga was recently shot in the hand while five others in his convoy were killed on a shoot-out along Nairobi-Nyahururu highway.
“We suspect the church members are former followers of the outlawed Mungiki sect and should we find out that they are involved in criminal activities, we shall close it in accordance with the law,†said Kobia Wa Kamau, the Narok County Commissioner.
The Kitengela based church remained closed Sunday as members kept away fearing arrest following reports that police were investigating the members.
Mr Wa Kamau said they are investigating the church after seven bodies were discovered in two shallow graves at a quarry in Kitengela two weeks ago. (READ: Seven bodies dug up from grave).
“We have arrested over 100 people whom we suspect are former members of the sect and they have provided us with some crucial information that could lead to the arrest of the killers.
“It is true we are profiling the former sect members and anyone found to be engaged with crime will be arrested and charged in court,†he said.
