Song bird Emmy Kosgei lost her cool when a known Kalenjin Facebook inciter told her to take her new year performance to Kibera and elsewhere else and not Eldoret town.
In a Facebook post which degenerated into insults and threats, Emmy Kosgei warned one Eric Kiplangat Sitonik of unspecified dire consequences. This was Kiplangat’s post:
“Guys, I think the Organizers of the so called Pamoja Peace Concert should be reminded in future to take it to Kibera, Mathare, Kisumu, Naivasha and Mombasa instead of bringing it year go and year come to Eldoret one of the most stable and peaceful city in Kenya. The people of Eldoret have moved on and they should not be reminded about some of dark moment in their lives”.Â
The comments degenerated into full blown hate speech and insults. At the centre of Kiplangat’s post was that more “peace, reconciliation and unity” concerts have been held in Eldoret since the post-poll violence. Irked, he said they should stop!
But the language use and the places he mentioned did not go down well with the organizers. Granted, places like Kisumu “moved on” long time ago. Kibera’s “healing” happened without political prayers rallies or unity of two tribes. But for Eldoret, because of politics and the magnitude of violence, most “reconciliation” events have been held in the town with different names – both political and religious.
Emmy felt offended. Not only is Sitonki some community spokesman but also the kind of ethnic vitriol which his Facebook post alluded to. She fired back in a series of comments but the juiciest was this:
N way . . See pple posting ..bitterness ,tribalism,… serem, kiprop, mibey, tom, chela, koskei, kiptoo etc do events as well in kibera wajir etc u dont hav to b part of the eldy one….. we r here to stay! 31st dec eldoret.. u can hug an electric transformer close to u !
