In the picture a past gathering of Kenyans in USA
By Dr. Erick Moriasi
Gone are the days that Kenyans in the diaspora depends predominately on relatives and friends to connect them with the “right business partners†locally. Social media is making it possible for people abroad and vis-a-versa to connect with one another and create business platforms. However we are also seeing that not many of these connections are with honest people, but instead people that have their own hidden agendas – and this is to con you out of your money.
Nowadays it is no longer a luxury that most Kenyans are resulting to doing their homework before they connect with their “future business partners†locally. No successful business connection can do without having the right information at the right time. We live in an information society where the problem is not the lack and inaccessibility of the information, but rather its quality and credibility.
If you are living abroad, you must first acknowledge that you will have to connect with a company that you trust and will entrust to perform the investigation for you and according to your specific needs. You must be in a position to be able to verify information and to distinguish whether it is relevant or not. You cannot afford to connect with your “future partner†without screening them to make sure that you are not going to end up partnering with a hyena where at the end of the day you will be the pudding!
The fact that you are miles wide away does not mean that you should compromise in effectively doing this exercise. We have seen that a large number of Kenyans in the diaspora have suffered substantial financial losses which makes it important that you should obtain and check out information on third parties before you venture doing business with them.
What Are The Important Points To Consider?:
a) Company/Individual background investigation
b) SWOT analysis
c) Identification of high-risk relationships and links among entities
d) Analysis of financial statements and data on the entity
e) Detailed report findings
These procedures are important as they involve searching, analyzing and thoroughly examining information on the company or person in question. The key information investigated should include marketing, business and registration data, financial data, information on the financial standing and credibility of the entity, information on the entity’s assets, reputation and presentation in media, and on its criminal history and political links.
