Former Speaker of the National Assembly Kenneth Marende has confirmed he will NOT be vying for any seat in the upcoming ODM party elections, the National Delegates Conference will bring together some 3200 delegates from all over the country at the Moi/Safaricom Sport Stadium Kasarani on February 28 for the exercise.
Marende joins the party’s outgoing Secretary General Anyang’ Nyong’o who has also opted out of the party’s nominations ahead of the National Delegates’ Conference.
The party’s Executive Director Magarer Langat said the exercise will be conducted through secret ballot to pick national office bearers in a move expected to usher in new leadership for the party.
The national elections will most likely pit the ‘analogy’ of the party against the digital leaders as different groups emerge to field candidates for various posts. Within Nyanza region, two groupings have emerged rooting for the post of Secretary General held by Nyong’o.
Among those eyeing the Secretary General seat are nominated senators Agnes Zani and Elizabeth Ongoro, Rongo MP Dalmas Otieno, Kisumu Central MP Ken Obura, and Siaya Senator James Orengo and Jeff Nyamboga
Lobbying has also intensified for the position of deputy party leader left vacant by former Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi who left the party in the run-up to the general elections in late 2012. Mombasa governor Ali Hassan Joho is believed to be eyeing the seat.
The party has attracted youngsters like the immediate Sec Gen of Moi University Students Association Seth Odongo popularly known as Dikembe Disembe and seasoned ODM blogger Lee Makwiny.
Dikembe candidature has elicited much debate on the role of the youth in frontline party affairs, his candidature is gaining momentum with several radio and TV stations seeking to slot him for an interview.
Marende’s political future is still not clear, it is rumoured with Uhuru’s presidency fast fading he may be appointed a senior position to help Uhuru govern.
Prime Minister Raila Odinga is expected to retain his position of party leader.
