White America is in a dilemma. Imagine sixteen years of African-American power atop the world’s whitest democracy? Well, that’s how things are shaping up with African-American Neurosurgeon Dr Ben Carson increasingly becoming a front-runner for the Republic Party ticket for the 2016 general elections.
Interestingly, the Democrats which fielded Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012 is seen keen on Senator Hillary Clinton. This arrangement, should it succeed, will see a white woman compete (again) with a black man but on reverse parties! The mental picture of it all, according to a Kenyan in the diaspora, is ‘revolting’ to both sides.
Unlike Obama, seen more as a quasi African American due to his first generation Kenyan roots; Carson will be the first descendant of the Slave history to be at the top. During the last elections, another African American, Herman Cain, had to drop out of the Republican ticket after allegations of infidelity sufficed.
Both Carson and Obama are household names in Kenya. In fact, before Obama, Carson’s book, “Gifted Hands” was a must-have inspirational companion to anyone who went to school. He is the first neurosurgeon to successfully separate conjoined twins.
His possible run for president gained momentum last week when he led a charge on Obama’s pet project, Affordable Care, comparing it to the worst thing that ever happened to America after slavery. He is also anti-gay marriages and once compared it to bestiality.
Carson will battle it out in a Republican star-studded list which has top front-runners as Ted Cruz and Rand Paul. Others include Chris Christie, Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio.
The Republican Party, though known to be predominantly white and conservative, has a sizeable African American trailblazers, including former Chief of Staff Collin Powel (equivalent of Kenya’s Chief of the Defense Forces), Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice among others.
