Incumbent SONU Chairman Babu Owino has said he intends to meet President Uhuru Kenyatta immediately SONU elections are over to ‘personally convey students’ disgust’ at the horrifying murder of Garissa University Students.
Speaking to Kenya Today, Babu exuded confidence he will win the SONU elections, saying he has kept his bargain to students every time they elected him.
Owino, going for a third term at the helm of SONU, also revealed he has been in contact with other student leaders from Moi University (from where Garissa University was hived off) who are preparing to bury the Garissa student union leaders and students killed during the attack.
“University students across the country want President Uhuru to understand their disgust at this horrifying murder. I intend to convey that to his excellency. I will seek audience with him (once this election is over),” said Owino.
Owino however dismissed claims he intends to call for nationwide demonstrations, saying that cannot solve the current issue.
“While all options are open to students, demonstrations remain the last option. In the present situation, all students want to know are the measures the president and his security forces are putting in place to avoid another massacre of this magnitude,” he said.
Over the weekend, student leaders from across the country congregated at the University of Nairobi to console the killed students at Garissa. It has emerged that one of the attackers was a university of Nairobi law graduate.
