Renowned writer and author Binyavanga Wainaina has furiously tore into Deputy President William Ruto’s assertions that homosexuals have no place in Kenya.
The Deputy President made the remarks at a church function in Kasarani, Nairobi, over the weekend sparking outrage over his homophobic attitude towards the LGBT community in Kenya.
Binyavanga is listed in TNA as President’s advisor on ‘reading’
“It is at the dead center of what this man stands for where the battle for the future thriving of Africans resides. This is not about ‘ignorance’ – it is about how we allow ourselves to be cursed by the fear of ourselves that imperialism left us making. Platforms of power are now built upon the promise to tear our hearts open, to break limbs, to impose the medieval, to hunt down and kill any difference. What he is saying come straight from the same evil that asks people to pull weeds from their land. Watch and listen to the man who wants to build into being our next president on the back of what we are being fear-ganged into hating. He asks you to walk into your neighbors house and burn the ‘witch’. This is the politics of gasoline and matches – by the time it grows into a fever, women will be undressed in public, told to obey husbands, give their salaries over. See boys will be beaten bloody in villages for ‘talking like a girl’. Here sits the idea that our constitution is bad, that our women must remain minors to their husbands, people’s peoplehood can be measured in hysteria churches, the christianity of hellfire, and the state must concede to this. he starts now to collect soldiers to march to the fire to burn the ‘other’. He promises the fire must come and make the Kenya he wants. Whoever is beaten senseless today because of his words, the person whose landlord kicks her out. You will hear no words about the rape of Liz from this man, nothing ever about the killing of albinos in Tanzania, but you know most certainly that many more will die while he has political power, because his power is looking ONLY for a way to grow out of this,” writes Wainaina.
“Homophobia is the least thing to worry about with what politics this man has stood for – he flirts with genocidal ideas and threats. He is our deputy president and wants to build a base of hate of more than just homosexuals to carry his ambitions forward. Do not doubt that he is far worse than Mugabe, Zuma and Museveni whose politics was built on progressive platforms to take Africans forward as modern diverse people. It is terrible how these two have stumbled – but it came at least from a tradition that they fought for. In their own ways they have represented much moving forward. and risked much peronally to move Africa forward. Ruto is a whole other level of the worstest: only right wing pentecostal nativism – the child of self hate, funded by by the children of white Southern American racists who and raided the continent kept millions of black people as slaves. Ruth is far right of George Bush. NRM and ANC fought for the rights of women. Women fought int he bush as equals. ANC fought for the rights of gays and lesbians – of all the marginalized. Ruto’s track record is consistently representing no tradition at all of inclusivity, and his die is cast – he will build his power base by looking for anything that seeks to push a certain kind of fear fascism to his base. I trust very much that Kenyans have already seen through this – but watch and see what he chooses to take advantage of to stoke fires and put his power dreams at the center of these fires”.
The writer then addresses those he shares Facebook TL with;
“If U want homosexuals removed from Africa or any such and have found your way into my facebook friends, kindly remove yourself. You are not my enemy but you live in no common human world we can build together. I do wish you well, you know. You can be my friend and not like homosexuals (hey that is fine: Me I do not like homophobes but drink with them often). But you cannot be my friend and wish them ill, danger, and support their further marginalization. It is possible to choose to accept that which you do not understand. To offer love on the basis of simple timeless humanity It is at the bottom of every contract about being human.” He posted on Facebook.
Last week, the LGBT members won a landmark court battle after High Court ordered the Registrar of Societies/NGOs to register a society which fights, and or, defends, their rights. The church, especially the pentecostal/evangelical types which milk worshippers dry every sunday in the name of fire and brimstones miracles, and which DP Ruto was pandering to, has reacted with outrage over the legal recognition of homosexuals in Kenya.
In a series of twitter jabs, Binyavanga, who is gay, lambasted the Deputy President for posturing to white pentecostal churches for ‘billions’.
