As America goes into 2012 presidential elections in a few months’ time, the world is all ears and eyes on who and what can possibly influence the out come. As usual, two horses are expected to fight it out in the grand race. the incumbent President, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney former Governor of the State of Massachusetts, have been nominated by the two leading political parties. The world pays attention to the elections because the dictum, ‘when America sneeze the world catches flu’, reigns on.
The America’s election qualifies for Battle of Titans pitting Democrats against conservative Republicans. The Democrats wrestled power from the Republicans in the year 2008 when Obama trounced John McCain to presidency to become the first black American President.
Mitt Romney is best known for his credentials as a business executive. He co-founded and led the spin-off Bain Capital, a private equity investment firm that became highly profitable. His net worth is estimated at between 190 million and 250 million dollars, wealth that helped fund his political campaigns. He served as Massachusetts governor for one term and joined the presidential race in 2007.
Romney’s background in businessman should be an advantage in an election dominated a failed economy, he will be trying trying to persuade voters that President Obama’s policies have not worked and that he should be elected to set the economy on strong recovery.
Romney must win several states that voted for Obama in 2008, particularly a combination of Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia and at least one other state.
Ann Luis Romney (nee Davies), the wife played a role in 2008 election; she is set to play a more active role in this year’s election. She got a prime time slot in the just concluded RNC in Tampa Florida where she was tagged with humanizing Romney, to him appeal to the ordinary Americans especially the critical group- the middle class, Romney is perceived more as an elitist going by his pro rich stance.
Genuinely captivating
President Obama took office in Jan 2009 for his first term amid high expectations of restoring foreign relations that had been ruined by the unpopular war in Iraqi and taming homeland terrorism.
The President showed commitment to the uplift the living standards of the many Americans and the renewed hope of the American hope. Obama got into the white house and running, set out his agenda and to date he has realized at least half of the what he pledged to the American people, he fixed relations with the international community especially the Arab World, ended the in Iraq, Osama bin Laden was captured and Killed and of course Afghanistan is a work in progress. Health care with all the politics surrounding it is a reality.
The one front where Obama doesn’t score well is on the economy and as one pundit put it, had the democrats had the majority in congress better pro economy policies could be in place and may be a much faster progress could have been registered. Ending of the Iraq war will register reduced federal spending hence a better focus to the economy.
The first lady, Michelle, is echoing the president’s voice from a family base that sweetly and emotionally stings, stirs and strings the nation. She is genuinely captivating; genuinely resonating; and genuinely electrifying. America and the entire world have a reason to listen to her.
Michelle, the daughter of a former city water pump operator, is simply luck in a woman; an ideal First Lady for America! In her own words, she “loved Obama the way he was†and does not wish to change. As she reveals, both of them share faith of “many American families†and that of their parents who “simply believed in that fundamental American promise that, even if you don’t start out with much, if you work hard and do what you’re supposed to do, you succeedâ€. That is the faith that keeps the Obama’s, Democrats and Americans believing in a better future for the children and parents. That is the spirit that adds value to the dream, vision and mission of all the Democrats and the American nation as the policies work to raise hope. That is source of the huge American wealth and power.
Moving forward with patience
In her recent speech, Michelle could not forget her experience as first lady “And everywhere I’ve gone, in the people I’ve met, and the stories I’ve heard, I have seen the very best of the American spirit … I’ve seen it in teachers in a near-bankrupt school district who vowed to keep teaching without pay … I’ve seen it in people driving for hours to bail out a flooded town. And I’ve seen it in our men and women in uniform and our proud military families … wounded warriors who tell me they’re not just going to walk again, they’re going to run, and they’re going to run marathons (saying) ‘I’d give my eyes 100 times again to have the chance to do what I have done and what I can still do’. Every day, the people I meet inspire me; every day, they make me proud; every day they remind me how blessed we are to live in the greatest nation on earth.†That was the true tune of a conscious mother; a leader of the people by the people with the people!
Michelle is not just a White House wife of President Obama but an icon of American leadership. With her exceptional simplicity and being in touch with reality of ordinary Americans, America must be blessed to have her shadows in power. She does not require guidance, she requires association. She is a woman of the world. She has a song on her tongue; a sweetly soothing song that ears would like to hear again and again. When she speaks, it is not only musical to a worried soul, but medicinal to a wounded heart. If there should be hope in a dream, Michelle Obama knows where it hails from. She is ready to show it.
She went ahead and revealed it in her easy way: “I see the concern in his eyes and I hear the determination in his voice as he tells me: ‘You won’t believe what these folks are going through, Michelle; it’s not right. We’ve got to keep working to fix this. We’ve got so much more to do.’ I see our collection of struggles and hopes and dreams. I see how that’s what drives Barack every single day. I love that he’s never forgotten how he started. I love that we can trust Barack to do what he says he’s going to do, even when it’s hard – especially when it’s hard. I love that for Barack, there is no such thing as “us” and “them” – he doesn’t care whether you’re a Democrat, a Republican, or none of the above; he knows that we all love our country and he’s always ready to listen to good ideas. He’s always looking for the very best in everyone he meets. And I love that even in the toughest moments, when we’re all sweating it – when we’re worried that the bill won’t pass, and it seems like all is lost – Barack never lets himself get distracted by the chatter and the noise. Just like his grandmother, he just keeps getting up and moving forward with patience and wisdom, and courage and grace.â€
Never happens at once
Michelle believes that change is sometimes hard, slow and/or “never happens all at once†but she is upbeat; “but eventually we’ll get there; we always doâ€. She knows they are not beginning from nowhere or doing everything; for American dream lives beyond their generations. She believes that the dream inhibits more of the people’s overwhelming love, courage and sacrifice for greater results than fears and doubts. She urges; “Today, when the challenges we face start to seem overwhelming – or even impossible – let us never forget that doing the impossible is the history of this nationâ€.
Leading from the front in modesty and simplicity, the woman who has become the role model to world’s young and old underscores historical contributions of ordinary and middle-class citizens. Without them, freedom, progress, security and democracy would not be celebrated in America. “If a generation could defeat a depression, and define greatness for all time, then surely; surely we can give everyone in this country a fair chance at that great American Dream. Because in the end, more than anything else, that is the story of this country – the story of unwavering hope grounded in unyielding struggle. That is what has made my story, and Barack’s story, and so many other American stories possible.
“Because today, I know from experience that if I truly want to leave a better world for my daughters, and all our sons and daughters; if we want to give all our children a foundation for their dreams and opportunities worthy of their promise; if we want to give them that sense of limitless possibility – that belief that here, in America, there is always something better out there if you’re willing to work for it, then we must work like never before and we must once again come together and stand together for the man we can trust to keep moving this great country forward; my husband, our President, President Barack Obamaâ€.
The First Lady doesn’t only flourish in her inspiring, divine and moving speeches, she owes America her life. She loves America. She wants to see glory coming upon the nation – not by way of miracle but – by way of unity and industry since any dignity of a nation is vested on value of her people. She offers her soul, body and spirit as a worthy sacrifice to national unity and duty. She offers the nation confidence and urges her: ‘Take it with you and count your blessings in the land of the living!’
God bless Michelle and family; God bless America.
