Former Nairobi mayor Geoffrey Majiwa has been acquitted of conspiracy to defraud the City Council of Sh283 million. He was acquitted of the charges by a Nairobi Court due to lack of evidence in the now famous cemetery land case.
The former mayor had been charged in October 2010, that on diverse dates between December 2009 and April 2010 he conspired, with others before court, to commit an offence of corruption by acquiring Sh283.2 million from the Ministry of Local Government purporting it to be the purchase price payable by the City Council for cemetery land at Mavoko Municipality, Machakos District.
At the time, Mr Majiwa denied all the counts.
The acquittal gives the former mayor fresh breath of political life as he prepares to run for an elective position in Nairobi, most probably as MP representing Kasarani constituency.
