Fatou Bensouda’s office cleaner accidentally trashed in the dustbin a letter in which five African countries (Uganda, Eritrea, Rwanda, Â Burundi and Tanzania) have written to the Hague based court wanting Ruto to be allowed to boycott all the proceedings of the court. The letter was said to have been hand delivered by Kenya’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, Rose Makena.
The man, only identified as Nicklaus (a French national) accidentally discarded the letter only to be informed by the prosecutor’s receptionist that it was an important letter from Africa. Shocked, he rushed to the garbage bin just in time to retrieve the wrinkled pieces before the garbage collection truck pulled away.
“It was a spectacle; you could have seen the shock in his face,” the receptionist is quoted saying.
The man did not read the contents of the letter which a source told this writer had no ‘letterhead’, and which may have confused Nicklaus as any waste paper from the prosecutor’s office.
“Are there no people to design letterheads in Africa?” asked the bewildered Frenchman, a charge which sounded racist, and which he later apologised after a pressman with Da Haag Newsletter asked him to clarify later.
Reacting to the news, Zimbabwe president did not mince his words and called for the immediate prosecution of the lowly office worker, terming his actions an ‘insult’ to all black men.
“That son of a bitch ought to be the one on the dock, not Ruto,” said Mugabe at rushed press conference at KICC, on the sidelines of the ongoing African Union meeting.
Reached for comment, the office of the Deputy President said they will let the AU deal with the issue, only adding that it may form part of the evidence next week when trial resumes.
