It was a dark day that saw a nation reel in shock and disbelief as islamist militants run riot, indiscriminately unleashing deathly terror on a high-end mall teeming with expatriates and the creme-de-la-creme occupying the high rungs of the social ladder.
In the confusion that ensued,a soft underbelly was viciously exposed for the world to see, with government operatives adding to the bewilderment with a series of mind-spinning public gaffes. The terrorists were having a field day, morbidly revelling in the paranoia that their devilish antics had struck in the hearts of Kenyans.
A cascade of media reportage kept the world up to speed with the unfolding drama as it eerily assumed the hue of a horror movie. In the midst of all this unspeakable barbarity and the attendant media blitz,a towering voice remained silent to the unease of many a faithful who hankered for his freshly pointed perspective. It was the equally reviled and revered voice of Bogonko Bosire,a self-described “motherboard of news and gossip, with a tabloid mentality”,notorious for his legendary nonchalance, unflappable demeanour and lack of false modesty.
Bogonko regarded himself as “the owner of news.”Jackal News a vicious blog that he edited remained inactive for days on end fuelling and heightening concerns that all was not well with him. For the optimistic, they chose to believe that Bogonko was perhaps taking his time to process the bloodbath before putting matters into their perspective, but that optimism soon gave way to fear that he could be among the victims of the terrorist attack. It was a misplaced fear, his body was not among the 67 people killed.Hopes were again revived but soon dashed after days turned into weeks, weeks into months…
It’s now almost two years since Bogonko Bosire was last sighted in public. The distressing part of his mysterious disappearance is that no one is certain about his whereabouts;no one can confirm whether he’s dead or alive.Attempts on mainstream and social media and searches in morgues to locate him have all come to nought.
At the time of his disappearance that whipped up a social media frenzy,he had been at the top of his game as evidenced by the thousands of followers that his ‘Jackal News’ blog commanded. His knack for spin,quick-witted lampooning of the social-political landscape vaulted him to the public consciousness;a feat that many of his contemporaries struggled to surpass let alone equal. An analysis of his extensive body of work spans fiction and non-fiction,revealing an indubitably excellent command of both crafts.
“You have talent sir.I think you should be writing for a mainstream papers,”I once told him in a social media chat.
“hahahaha! They are stupid,”he responded, half in jest and half seriously.
The chat, albeit brief, spoke volumes of a bloke reeling from a strong, almost implacable antipathy towards the mainstream media, which he ruthlessly skewered in his blog posts. He took on towering media personalities from Lilian Muli Kanene whom he accused of “unpalatable hubris” to Cynthia Nyamai whom he lampooned for a string of adulterous liaison. No one was to powerful to be skewered as politicians and business magnets found themselves at the receiving end of his venom-spitting.
This was the life that defined a man widely revered for his command of the Queen’s language and topical issues of the day.His love of beer ,nyama choma, and women was legendary. The rumor mill has it that he suffered from off-kilter sexual obsessions that included raiding women apartments for their undergarments. His focus on women attracted flak that he was a misogynist;a claim that he quickly rebuffed quipping:
:”Those who accuse me of misogyny should know that my mother is a woman”
Many saw him as a pro-establishment pundit,in fact he’s credited for waging an aggressive social media campaign that catapulted Uhuru Kenyatta to the pinnacle of power;the presidency. No question that he was a central cog in Jubilee’s propaganda wheel.
Many have criticised the president for not doing enough to unravel the mystery of Bogonko’s disappearance. Two years on but no one seems to have an inkling of his whereabouts, not even his parents David Bosire and Esther Bosire who are still reeling in shock and emotional devastation.WHERE IS THE JACKAL?
