President Magufuli has banned the collection of raw milk from Tanzania to be processed in Kenya. In a meeting with Tanzania’s business sector, the President wondered why raw milk should be transported to Kenya for processing then re-sold to Tanzanians if Tanzania has a government and a business sector.
Magufuli, like some of the Tanzania leaders before him, appear to be convinced that Tanzania is bigger than any one Tanzanian, however wealthy or influential.
It is not that there are no crooked Tanzanians who aren’t too willing to sell their nation’s resources cheaply to their neighbours. In fact, such people were already in business.
The fellows who were selling raw Tanzania milk to Kenya were Tanzanians. Magufuli revealed this was only possible because his fellow Tanzanians were too willing to destroy that country’s industrial base to have a reason to cheaply trade with Kenya.
This is the very reasoning that we in the opposition rejected in the now forgotten ”sugar debate” a few months ago. Here in Kenya, we saw how fellow countrymen were too willing to cite the excuse of mismanaged and debt ridden sugar industries as reason for importing Uganda Sugar.
They even went further to wax ‘East Africa Community’ lyrical. Uhuru and his men had all sorts of excuses to support destroying western Kenya sugar sector. Bad leaders with simplistic ideas about their countries can conjure anything.
No nation can develop when its primary economy is controlled from abroad. No nation has ever developed when every consumer produce, especially primary produce, is imported from another country, near or far.
In Kenya, President Uhuru Kenyatta signed away Kenya’s sugar sector to Uganda. Western Kenya and Eastern Uganda have the same climatic conditions and soil types.
As an avid reader of XN Iraxi, he once argued that ‘management’ is the fifth factor of production.Tanzania, if it ever overtakes us, will be a case of a people who paid particular attention to WHO would be in charge of ‘management’ of that nation’s affairs.
In Kenya, President Uhuru globe trots to bring in ‘loans’ – which ideally is ‘surplus capital’ from well governed nations – but destroys this country’s critical sectors.
His answer to the bad economic choices he’s treated the country to since taking power – more taxes and more loans!
